Texas EMIG is an organization that exists to serve its member, the patients of the Ben Taub Emergency Center and the great city of Houston. Three words define the philosophy behind the projects of Texas EMIG: Education, Empowerment and Excellence.
Education: We seek to strengthen the education of our medical student members by providing them opportunity to learn, practice and master clinical skills. Through our projects, members learn skills such as CPR, ACLS, phlebotomy, EKG’s, airway management, chest tube placement and wound care. In addition, members have access to the Ben Taub Emergency Center where they can learn the inner workings of acute patient management and the art of patient care. Moreover, through projects such as the Ben Taub Patient Education Initiative, we seek to educate our patients, knowing that providing patients with knowledge and insight into their health is as important as providing them with medical care.
Empowerment: At the very least, members who participate in our projects will be armed with the knowledge and skills to better care for their patients. However, as an organization we hope that our members will aspire to more. We hope that the spirit of service on which all our projects are predicated will inspire our members to contribute back to their peers, patients and community. Our EMIG is unique in that all our projects are student initiated, managed and directed. The leaders that will sustain and advance our projects are the very members who participate in them. If there is within our membership a person with an idea or a desire to serve, Texas EMIG is committed to nurturing that desire. To those ends, EMIG has trained its members as BLS and ACLS instructors, it has spawned several Schweitzer Fellows, cadaver lab TA’s and multiple student project directors. Our officers contribute to the community on a scale unparalleled by any other student organization and exemplify how medical students can make a tangible difference in our own education and community.
Excellence: Texas EMIG is committed to being the best medical student organization in the country. We believe in creating, managing and advancing quality initiatives that will be of service and value to our members. To serve our peers and community is an honor and a privilege; Texas EMIG seeks excellence and aspires to always improve upon our work.
